Going Solo at the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for a lot of people. But for others, it can be a particularly lonely time of the year. That’s especially true for seniors, who may be dealing with the loss of a spouse or being apart from family during a season when every movie, song and TV commercial celebrates scenes of festive togetherness.

Felke also wants younger family and community members to look at it as an opportunity for connection with the senior citizens in their lives. “Ask for advice around the holidays,” he said. “[Seniors] probably have some really good things to share, those family recipes and family traditions and family stories. Ask them, ‘What do you remember most about when you were a kid? What were the things you looked forward to?’ Getting them to be engaged in the conversation is an important piece.”
