Honors College Advising

There are three different paths an Honors student can take which are listed here: Honors Curriculum Requirements

Exploratory Advisor:

• Assists first-year Honors students with courses and Honors requirements
• Once a student has "transitioned" to college advising, assists with Honors curriculum requirements only

Major Advisor:

• Assists with schedule planning related to the major you choose after the first year. Your major advisor is your primary resource for course selection within your academic program. 

Requirements for the first semester:

Initial Pre-Registration Meeting

Student will meet with their advisor during the first few weeks of the term to discuss how their semester has started and to reinforce the role of the academic counselor, address any issues of concern, and to look ahead to the pre-registration process for the next semester. This pre-registration meeting takes place once every semester. Students will be able to talk to their academic advisor about their academic progress, discuss possible course options for their second semester at the university, and review the online course registration process. 

Requirements for the second semester:

Secondary Pre-Registration Meeting

This pre-registration meeting typically takes place during a student's second term.  During this second pre-registration meeting academic advisors will focus on reinforcing academic milestones for degree progression (and the consequences for not meeting these requirements), sharing information about the resources and opportunities that the academic college has to offer, while looking ahead to the preregistration process for the next semester. Students will be required to meet with their academic advisor to talk about their academic progress, discuss possible course options for their third semester at the university, and to review the advising transition process.

All Honors Students are required to complete two or one Honors Experience, dependent on the curriculum they select.

EXPERIENCE	DESCRIPTION
Liberal Arts	Complete nine (9) credits of Honors courses with the prefix IDH, ISS, ISC Only applies to the Honors Scholars and Honors Foundations curriculum options
Honors Contracts	Complete approved Honors Courses, Honors Embedded Courses, or Honors Contracts in three (3) different upper-level (3000-4999) courses with a grade of "B" or higher. Only applies to the Honors Foundations curriculum option
Research	Complete an Honors Thesis or Honors Independent Research *OR* Certification Alternatives: Complete an independent or directed study course*  Complete an internship consisting of more than 70 hours* Work with a professor for more than 70 hours on an academic research project* Work with a professor on a project or paper (includes artistic performance/presentation) that was presented at a regional, state, national, or international conference *Cannot already be required by major
Service	Complete four (4) credits from the following Honors courses: IDS 3920, IDS 3300 and IDH 4638C *OR* Certification Alternatives:  Complete 160+ hours of service learning (documented through Eagle Career Link) Take a leadership role in a service project in the top 10% of FGCU students Take a leadership role in a service project recognized at Community Engagement Day
Study Away/Study Abroad	Complete one (1) course with an Honors College Study Abroad Trip *OR* Certification Alternatives:  Go on an FGCU-sponsored trip outside of FL for 7+ days Go on a study abroad experience sponsored by another institution for 14+ days Go on a study abroad experience on your own for 28+ days  Complete a language-learning experience beyond the intermediate level  Be an international exchange student or live in the U.S. for less than 2 years
