Integrated Studies Major Advising

The Integrated Studies major is for students who want to construct their own path of study out of  FGCU's diverse course offerings. The core courses in the major - which include Foundations of Civic Engagement, the Integrated Core Seminar, and a number of Issues course options - are designed to help students synthesize the knowledge and skills they attained in completing courses across FGCU's academic programs.

The Integrated Studies major allows students to create individually-developed courses of study. This program is ideal for students with a clear idea for a career path that requires coursework from a variety of disciplines. The Integrated Studies department also offers a suite of interdisciplinary courses to choose from. 

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Integrated Studies, this major can take you wherever you want to go! Selecting courses that support your goals is key. Recent graduates are employed in diverse industries including the non-profit industry, military contracting, training and development, construction, sports management, higher education/student affairs, sustainable living, education, app development, travel, tourism, entrepreneurship, and many others. 

Integrated Studies BA Program Requirements for the 2023-2024 Catalog Year

Interested students must have at least 30 credits earned to declare Integrated Studies as a major.  Contact Exploratory Advising at (239) 745-4422 to make an appointment to change your major!

• Students can only declare one minor with the Integrated Studies major
• The Integrated Studies BA cannot be a double major, dual degree, or second baccalaureate degree

Students in the Integrated Studies major are required to complete IDS 3300 (Foundations of Civic Engagement), IDS 3920 (University Colloquium), IDS 4910 (Integrated Core Senior Seminar) in the last semester, and an IDS elective. IDS electives include IDS 3143 (Issues in Science & Technology), IDS 3302 (Issues in Politics & Economics), IDS 3304 (Issues in Ecology & the Environment), IDS 3305 (Issues in Media, Literature, & the Arts), IDS 3332 (Issues in Culture & Society), IDS 4930 (Special Topics in Integrated Studies), and more!

Students in the Integrated Studies major are able to take a variety of courses from across the University, in areas such as: the Fine Arts (Art, Dance, Theatre), Social Science (Anthropology, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology), Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Geology), Justice Studies (Criminal Justice, Forensic Studies, Legal Studies), Humanities (Communication, Journalism, Literature, Foreign Languages, Philosophy, Religion), and Mathematics. Students may also take courses from Business (Management, Marketing, Advertising, Entrepreneurship), Education, Engineering, Health & Wellness through the declaration of a minor and/or College approval. 

The Senior Seminar course serves as the capstone for the Integrated Studies major, and incorporates critical thinking, and problem solving skills related across disciplines. In the course, students will receive guidance on post-graduation plans including graduate school and/or employment. Students will work closely with career services, create/improve their resume, and prepare for the job search process. Students will also complete a senior project related to their area(s) of interest. Senior Seminar is intended to be taken in the student's final semester.
