WCE Ambassador Program

Who are the ambassadors? 

The ambassadors are a group of students who volunteer for the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering (WCE). The primary responsibilities for an ambassador are to attend outreach events and to promote WCE.  The ambassadors advertise the engineering and construction management programs and share their experiences of being a WCE student at FGCU. Ambassadors collaborate with the WCE staff to create lessons and activities for K-12 students that demonstrate engineering, computing and construction concepts. 

Some events the ambassadors attend include:

• Eagle Expo - fall and spring
• Events at local elementary, middle and high schools
• Building tours for prospective students
• U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering Career & Internship Expo - fall and spring

Engineering Ambassador Requirements

1. GPA of 2.5 or above
2. Have a declared major in bioengineering, construction management, civil, environmental, environmental engineering, software engineering, or computer science
3. Passed Introduction to Engineering, Introduction to Programming, or Construction Seminar
4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
5. Complete an Ambassador Application. Applications are accepted during the spring semester.

The Learning Hub

The Learning Hub provides academic support and mentoring for WCE students at Florida Gulf Coast University. Upper-level students are staffed in Holmes Hall 203 and available to help students with their courses.

How it Works

The Learning Hub, located in Holmes 203, is open Monday - Friday from 10 AM - 5 PM and is staffed with upper-level students called fellows. The Learning Hub fellows can assist you in your engineering or construction management courses. All Learning Hub mentors are successful students, but not professors or experts. They are a great resource but are not responsible for the final grade on an assignment or in the course.  If you have any questions regarding the Learning Hub, please contact us at 239-745-4310 or wceinfo@fgcu.edu.

WCE Careers & Connections

WCE Careers & Connections is a tabling event for up to six employers at a time, downstairs in the Holmes Hall Lobby. These tabling events will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from Oct. 29 to Dec. 4 from 9:30-11:30 AM. The opportunity has been sent out to all of the employers who were signed up for the fall WCE Career Expo that was cancelled by Hurricane Milton. Bring your resume and come to the Holmes Hall Lobby to learn about these companies and the jobs and internships they have available for you!

How do you find an internship?

Several times a month I send out internship and job opportunities from wceinfo@fgcu.edu. Check your email for these opportunities, as they come from employers that have recently reached out to me. Additionally, all employers are encouraged to post their positions on Eagle Career Network, FGCU's internship and job board. Students can log in to this platform using their FGCU credentials. You can also find helpful information about internships on the Career Development Services site. If you try these steps and still have difficulty, don't hesitate to reach out to me.

What is the different between an internship and a part-time position?

When a student completes an academic internship, they receive academic credit for the experience. The companies will be required to complete paperwork from the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering and help the intern(s) reach the learning outcomes for the course. To sign up for an academic internship, you must receive approval from the professor teaching the internship course. 

Non-academic internships (part-time or full-time positions) do not earn academic credit. These positions are relationships strictly between the student and employer – FGCU is not involved. There is no required paperwork to be completed.

How many hours does a student need to complete for internship credit?

For internships completed with an Engineering degree, students are expected to complete 135 hours.
For internships completed with a Construction Management degree, students are expected to complete 180 hours.

WCE Day

WCE Day is a day full of events to celebrate our incredible students. The first half of the day features students presenting their senior projects. Later, graduating students are invited to the WCE Graduation Celebration. The evening includes celebrating our graduates, recognizing student achievements, and more!  Additional information will be provided via email.
