Consistent with its mission and guiding principles, Florida Gulf Coast University
is committed to academic excellence and continuous quality improvement, as supported
by a sound teaching-learning process. Within this process, students and instructors
share responsibility for learning that is a movement from the simple to the complex,
the concrete to the abstract, and the dependent to the independent. The Academic Learning
Compact (ALC) initiative supports the teaching-learning process by clearly identifying
expected core student learning outcomes in the areas of content/discipline knowledge
and skills, communication skills, and critical thinking skills; aligning curricula
with expectations; and using assessment to guide continuous improvement.
Content/Discipline Knowledge and Skills
Graduates in the Music Therapy B.M.T. will be able to:
- Demonstrate competence in the application of music foundations during the delivery of supervised music therapy services for varied population groups.
- Demonstrate competence in the application of clinical foundations during the delivery of supervised music therapy services for varied population groups.
- Demonstrate competence in the application of professional standards of practice during the delivery of supervised music therapy services for varied population groups.
Content/discipline knowledge and skills are assessed in the context of the co-requisites,
MUS 4920, Senior Capstone in Music, & MUY 4xxx, Music Therapy Internship. Requirements
for MUS 4920 include reflective documentation regarding the applications of music
foundations, clinical foundations, and standards of practice during the period of
internship. Requirements for MUY 4xxx include mid-term and final self-evaluations
regarding the degree of mastery of professional competencies, including direct application
of knowledge and skills during the period of internship.
Communication Skills
Graduates in the Music Therapy B.M.T. will be able to:
- Accurately use music-centered terms and concepts associated with supervised music therapy services in dialog with other professional
staff, in written documentation, and in case study reports.
- Accurately use clinical terms and concepts associated with supervised music therapy services in dialog with other professional
staff, in written documentation, and in case study reports.
- Accurately convey music therapy goals, methods and strategies associated with supervised music therapy services in dialog with other professional
staff, in written documentation, and in case study reports.
Communication skills are assessed in the context of the co-requisites, MUS 4920, Senior
Capstone in Music, & MUY 4xxx, Music Therapy Internship. Requirements for MUS 4920
include reflective documentation regarding the communicative content used during the
period of internship. Requirements for MUY 4xxx include mid-term and final self-evaluations
regarding the degree of mastery of professional competencies, including direct use
of communication skills among other healthcare providers during the period of internship.
Critical Thinking Skills
Graduates in the Music Therapy B.M.T. will be able to:
- Differentiate optimum music approaches, including styles and materials, based on assessment of strengths and needs for individual clients served across
varied population groups.
- Differentiate optimum clinical approaches, including therapeutic principles and types of therapeutic relationships, based on assessment of strengths and needs for individual clients served across
varied population groups.
- Differentiate optimum music therapy approaches, including receptive and expressive methods, based on assessment of strengths and needs for individual clients served across
varied population groups.
Critical thinking skills are assessed in the context of the co-requisites, MUS 4920,
Senior Capstone in Music, & MUY 4xxx, Music Therapy Internship. Requirements for MUS
4920 include reflective documentation regarding processes and outcomes associated
with programmatic strategies unique to each client served during the period of internship.
Requirements for MUY 4xxx include mid-term and final self-evaluations regarding the
degree of mastery of professional competencies, including direct use of critical thinking
skills in determining optimum approaches to client services during the period of internship.
